The CIPD annual Health and Well-being at Work survey, in partnership with Simplyhealth, is now open! We are grateful to every individual who takes the time to complete this short online survey and contributes to our work on this important agenda. Your feedback is vital to us and helps us to build the evidence base for how organisations can best create healthy workplaces. It will help other people professionals to support people’s health and well-being in the most effective way, but it has much wider reach as the CIPD will use the findings to directly influence government policy.
More and more employers are recognising the importance of people’s health and well-being, not just to individuals but to organisations as well. But many still lack the knowledge of how to develop an effective programme and make the most impact on people’s health at work. Government also needs more evidence of what works in organisations, and what reforms are needed to improve workplace support and prevent people falling out of the labour market due to ill health.
Completing the survey is a good opportunity to take stock of your own organisation’s approach to health and well-being, as well as helping us to develop effective tools and resources for organisations. Research repeatedly shows that work can be a force for good: not only is quality work good for our well-being, but a healthy, happy workforce produces the highest-quality work too. The latest Health and Well-being at Work Survey (published in April) shows that most organisations today are taking some action to improve overall health and well-being, with an increasing focus on mental health. Employee well-being is also slowly rising up the agenda of more senior leaders.
But mental ill health and stress remain stubbornly common in the UK’s workplaces, and are two of the three top causes of long-term sickness absence. Stress-related absence is on the rise in nearly two-fifths of the UK’s workplaces, and less than half of people professionals say their efforts to tackle stress in their organisation are effective. Clearly, many employers’ efforts are falling short of what’s needed. And so we need to continue to build the evidence base and learn about what works in organisations, so we can support our members and employers to make the step change needed to support people’s health. Our online survey is a key way to achieve this.
The online survey is short and easy to complete. Submit your feedback by Monday 18 November 2019 and you’ll have the chance to win Powerbeats Pro totally wireless high-performance earphones!
