Moving from specialist to generalist

Hello, I’m looking to diversify my skill set to allow me to move from L&D Manager to HR Manager. I’ve gained my MCIPD qualification as a specialist and have a degree in Marketing & Business Law. Can anyone recommend any courses/ qualifications I could be looking at whilst furloughed to develop my knowledge? Manny thanks .

  • Hi Gail, showing those generalist skills can be tricky. Hopefully you have done a bit of a skills gap analysis using the CIPD professional tool and identified the priority areas to focus on.

    You probably need to update yourself on employment law and the fundamentals of that. I subscribe to Daniel Barnet - a barrister for a regular newsletter and use the CIPD library for info. Lots of websites like Jaluch UK have useful HR based articles to read and learn from.

    I find Twitter a great source of learning, networking and discussions. #HRHour is a great chat to get involved in and is #LDInsight They happen weekly and there is a real community spirit, we chat about common topics and people share their views so you get to build up a picture of HR.

    I find podcasts great too. So many HR businesses and thought leaders do them so you can gain an insight into working practices.There are also some great books out there.

    Course wise, I would pick ones that are relevant to your skills gaps. I did a MA in HRM having started life as an L&D specialist and found it enormously helpful. Now you have so many short courses, online learning from places like Coursera etc or the OU that you really need to start with your key personal gaps I think and go through them in bite size chunks or you might wonder where to start.

    Thank you for your reply Sharon, it’s really helpful.
    I have done a skills gap analysis and have identified employment law as my key opportunity. I’m now looking at a L5 award in employment law as a first step.
    I’ll definitely have a look at the other resources you’ve mentioned (twitter hadn’t crossed my mind).

    Fab Gail. Employment law sounds like a great place to start. You probably know that lots of law firms do free legal sessions which are great to keep update to date.

    Twitter's very underrated as a source of learning, in my view. That's a shame as if you get involved in the right chats and follow some good people you can steer clear of the bad stuff and learn a lot. Good luck and enjoy the journey to a more generalist role.
