I don’t have experience working in HR but I have worked in sales for 5 years.I am looking for voluntary job to start my career in HR as wherever I apply for any HR job they ask for 1-2 years experience.Today I have got an email for Governor’s role. Does it count as work experience? Pls advice

  • Is this a school governor's role? It might have some relevance to HR but isn't quite the same as working in HR. Could be a good starting point though.
  • Being a School Governor can be a hugely rewarding job - however I wouldn't see it as a fast track to HR experience or giving you the "1-2 years experience" that most HR people are looking for
  • Thanks for ur reply. Can u pls advise what can I do to get my 1st job in HR

There are a large number of posts with no magic answers. Some suggestions

    1) network like crazy
    2) tailor every application and cv as much as possible
    3) get an admin job in a bigger company and look to move across
    4) directly approach lots of smaller companies
    5) try volunteering
    6) look at public sector and third sector
    7) take agency work
    8) take short term contracts
    9) apply to companies you have some link with or link to industry if you have previous work history
    10) keep applying.
