How do I get there?

I decided on a career change two years ago, resigned from my job without another one in sight, and enrolled on the Level 5 HRM qualification. I've absolutely loved the last 2 years and have learnt so much - starting as a HR Administrator, then HR Assistant, and now HR Officer, a standalone position. I am continuing to learn a lot, as its a generalist HR role, but the first HR person they've had so I'm doing a lot of project managing/overall review/policy rewriting. 

I would love to be in a HR project managing role, or a specialist ER role, but I'm struggling with having a very specific plan the last years and knowing what exactly I'm meant to be doing, to not really knowing how to reach my next goals.

Is it a matter of learning as much as I can in this job over the next few years, or to give it a year or so and then try to move onto a role that has a focus on my interests? Are there any other tools I should be using to help me develop? I have no HR manager, or person of HR expertise to guide me and I feel like this is really what I need at this stage.

  • Hello Sobia, I suggest that you move onto a CIPD Level 7 classification now, since you obtained the basics in your past 2 years, it may be time to challenge yourself and your mind. This will provide you with the relevant insights, knowledge, practices and understanding about the HR role in general. Furthermore it will enable you to obtain a more senior role, such as a HR Manager/ Senior HR Advisor by having the relevant HR accreditation. Further to your completion, I suggest you speak to the CIPD membership team to understand what are the next steps to reach a Chartered membership status. This will keep you busy, but key is that you track your goals in a yearly outline, by keeping a CPD learning log of what you have done, accomplished, how you shared the learnt knowledge, etc. Good luck, as I think you have an exciting future ahead of you!

    Either of those is fine, depending on how the job goes. In a standalone HR role, if the organization expands there's a real opportunity to move up organically to a management role. If it doesn't, you can still learn a lot and use it to springboard to the next opportunity.

    I have no HR manager, or person of HR expertise to guide me and I feel like this is really what I need at this stage.


    Get in touch with your local CIPD group. They will often be delighted to facilitate a mentorship arrangement between you and a more experienced practitioner.

    Hi Sabine, thank you for your feedback, its been really helpful. I hadn't considered the Level 7, and I don't think its something I want to do now, but I will definitely research the requirements and think about when I do want to start.
