What did you learn from the most?

I'm currently managing an apprentice - this is her first role after doing 'A' levels - and am working with her to do a development plan. I'd really like to push her as she has tons of potential and is a case of working with her 'unconscious competence' to help raise her skill levels and raise her self-awareness of what she likes/doesn't like. Her levels of self-awareness are low, and we're making progress as she's experiencing a wider variety of work and receiving feedback. We're based in L&D, something which she didn't know existed until she joined us - as her main knowledge of HR was the ''hiring and firing' side.......!

So my question is, what did tasks/ projects did you enjoy the most and get the most our of when you joined HR?

For example, one of the things that stood out for me was acting as a note taker in a grievance meeting and seeing both the manager and employee accounts, as well as the end to end process of what happens when a person raises a grievance.

I think familiarising your apprentice with your processes ie, the employee life cycle so offer letter, contract, induction etc and then, if you dont already have those processes written down in place, getting her to write them up properly. This serves to reinforce what she has learned and understand the process in full.
Also as you say, note taking. This will prove invaluable going forward as will general shadowing.

I also think it is great that you recognise the employees potential and are open to ways of developing this. At the start of my HR career I would have relished being managed by someone as supportive and invested as you :-)

In one of my first roles as a HR assistant I was responsible for organizing an event for International Women's Day that promoted internal services to staff. Really enjoyed having the responsibility and owning my own project from start to finish, but it was also a very helpful way of understanding the employee rewards offered and how that fitted into the compensation and benefits aspect of HR.
