Is there any real merit, gain or advantage in an HR practitioner to also study the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) professional exams, or a waste of time?

Two key chartered professions and areas of business, although both similar yet unrelated as one deals with people management and the other with the management of the promotion of goods, products and services.

If someone however is interested in carving out a career in a specialist niche HR area such as Employer Branding, or is an L&D Coach or Mentor who wishes to take a marketing approach to job search (i.e. why some products are purchased and why are some left on the shelf to be brought at a discount), can or does an advanced level professional Marketing qualification, coupled with a CIPD 7 give any additional strings to one's bow, so to speak?

Of course, it's still a completely different profession, one has to make the choice between the two and cannot practice both simultaneously, unless they work two part time roles during the week which is unlikely, and an HR Manager cannot just become a Marketing Manager (and vice versa) as they lack the experience.

Can however any link, although indirect and tenuous, be made between the two as Marketing as a subject discipline has also interested me, but often tougher to break into than HR.

  • I have never come across a senior HR professional with a high level qualification in marketing. Whilst I can see the theoretical links I am not sure in practical terms if they would open up any career doors.
