Management and Leadership certificates to help boost your career

Good afternoon all,

I would like to gain a Management/Leadership certification as I would like to opt for a HR Team Leader or Manager position in a year or so. I am hoping that you can help me decide which certification I should go ahead with.

I have a Business Degree, a Master´s Degree in Human Resources Management and the CIPD level 5.

I have just managed people during 5 months in the HR department of a charity as well as I managed people during a few months at a restaurant.

I am aware of the two main bodies here in the UK “Chartered Management Institute” and “Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM)”.

The ones I am considering are:

ILM: Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management

https://www.i-l-m.com/Learning-and-Development/management/management-and-leadership-generic/8606-level-3-certificate-in-principles-of-leadership-and-management

CMI: Management and Leadership (Level 4)

https://www.managers.org.uk/education-and-learning/qualifications/qualification-library/level-4-management-and-leadership/

I am confused about this one as it seems like there are three sub-levels? Award, certificate and diploma?

I have also read that CMI is more suited for private companies and ILM for public ones.

I also have a few more questions:

  1. What´s the difference between

https://www.institutelm.com/

https://www.i-l-m.com/

  1. Will they give me exemptions to complete other certificates once I have completed the ones I listed above?
  2. Do I have to complete the CMI and ILM certificates through external providers? If so, which ones would you recommend?
  3. For CMI, I can only see 3 levels through external providers 3,5 and 7 whereas on CMI website there are more https://www.managers.org.uk/education-and-learning/qualifications/ Why is that?

Thanks

Jose

  • Hi Jose
Both these qualifications are pitched at RQF level 4, (HNC, 1st year of a Degree). There's not much difference in terms of the organisations, both are well respected and recognised, although the ILM tends to focus more on vocational training. The difference betweeen ILM and the Institute is, the ILM focus on learning provision and accredation and the institute focuses on membership (ILM qualifications don't come with post-nominals). You can add more units/modules to an award to turn it into a certificate provided it meets with the rules of combination.

There are any number of external providers offfering, face-to-face, blended or online programs, you choose what suits you. External providers don't have to offer all the qualifications, as it is demand driven, we have to have enough students to make a course viable.

Both the CMI and Institute offer membership based on recognition of proir learning/experience. You might be able to pick up some cheap post-nominals for an annual subscription.

I honestly think you have enough in terms of qualifications for a junior leadership role, so if I were you, I would be looking to use the CIPD (free) learning hub resources and making sure the I have evidence of CPD before I spend any money.

    Best of luck
