Level 7 - Study or Assessment Interview?

Hi Everyone,

I’m weighing up the best route to Level 7, specifically the Experience Assessment versus the traditional study path, and would really value some insight from those who’ve been through it.

I completed Level 5 in 2020 and have over 10 years of HR experience, including the past 6 years in standalone Head of HR roles. I’m currently leading the build of a new HR function at a fintech scale-up, which is a role I have undertaken in my last two businesses, and from experience is one that takes up a lot of time.

While I’m genuinely interested in the learning that comes with the study route, the Experience Assessment feels more realistic given my current workload. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s taken the EA path, what the process was like, how you prepared, and any guidance on how to pitch your experience effectively. My roles whilst strategic are generalist roles within SMEs, so I’m also keen to understand if that background provides enough evidence to succeed in the EA route.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • Hey Hayley,

I completed my level 7 CIPD and then went on to become a chartered fellow through the interview process - you could too. If you are not successful, review the feedback and then sign up for the level 7 programme, although I understand the additional costs associated with this.

If you want to meet peers, a CIPD course that offers blended learning (live and self-paced programme) might be best. It can help you expand your network, get additional support and enhance your thinking through live interactive sessions, which is what I enjoyed the most. Or if you just want the feather in your cap the interview would be the best foot forward, for the level 7 it's a chunky interview but manageable if you have the right level of experience.

Not sure if that helped or hindered!
