Referencing Advice

Hi I am a new to both studying and HR. I’m a single mum and have started my level 3 CIPD qualification alongside part time working. I have completed my first assignment ( 9 questions - Business, culture and change in context). I need to go through my 9 questions now adding references - I know I probably should have done the references whilst doing the assignment and not all at the end but as I was struggling, didn’t recieve the tutorial support I had expected and put them off till now. I understand how I am supposed to reference and the type of references I need I am really struggling to find academic style references. I have lots of online newspaper, statistics, non reputable websites etc I am looking for models, theories, articles, book extracts etc. I have been looking so far on google and google scholar changing the date to ‘since 2021’ but I can’t seem to find the type of references I need. Does anyone have any tips where else I can look or how I can find acceptable and varied references please, Thank you Sophia

  • Hi Sophia,
The main sources i used for L3 & L5 where CIPD, ACAS, GOV.UK, Armstrong's handbook of human resource management practise, i also used lots of websites though that had articles on various related subjects - personnel today, people management, ONS - for stats, Xpert HR. If you can get one good HR management book, such as Armstrong's it is quite helpful for referencing
  • Hi Sophia, hope you're keeping well?

I'm not sure what institution you're studying L3. I was given access to at least one online research information library platform. Perhaps, you may also have something similar such as EBSCO, or JSTOR or GALE. These platforms are super rich in research content (ancient and modern) and should provide you with sufficient 'academic' reference materials.

Here's wishing you all the best and success in your assignment and study.

    My 2 cents well spent.

  • Hi Sophia
Well done on your progress on your first unit. Some great suggestions here already so I will just add that you should please check what your study centre provides and ask them if you need support on it - they are there to help you to achieve your CIPD qualification and should have resources and support available to guide you on this.
    Good luck with your course.

  • Hi all, thank you for your comments. The websites and info you have given looks really helpful and I am spending today doing my references so I will look into the suggestions. A book sounds like a good idea too as it might help me through a few assessments. I am studying with an online company and the only resources they provide are the CIPD ones which I have used quite a lot for information to help me write the assessment. Hopefully looking at some of the other resources you have all suggested will open up some more avenues for me, not just with references but with future research . I wish I found this comunity earlier! Thanks again, Sophia

You should have access to business journals through the CIPD website. Have you tried searching on there?
