questions about assessment writing

Hi I had some great feedback with a previous post so I was hoping to get some insight with a few questions I have regarding assessment writing. I have not studied for 20 years and have just completed my assessment for my level 3 CIPD 1st module. I am nearly finished adding some references and will go through just tweaking, checking grammar and reducing word count etc before I submit. I am unsure on the following in formal writing: 1. Can I use terms like GM instead of General Manager? 2. CIPD always use ‘People professionals’ but at my company we use HR, can I still use HR whilst discussing my company? 3. When discussing the company I work for should I use ‘we’ or ‘they’? 4. Am I ok to use the name of the company I work for throughout the assessment? My tutor said yes but I have seen online things about legal implications of me discussing what goes on in the company. 5. I am answering 9 questions. Would you write the whole question out and then the answer? Or just type ‘AC 1.1’ then the answer. My tutor says not to write the question but on you tube videos from other providers that detail this CIPD assessment they say to write the question. I do have a format guide but it has other types of assessment eg. Fact sheet, guiding document, reports, briefing papers etc none of them are for a list of questions. I am guessing I write just the AC then go down 2 lines and write my content, all in the same font no bold or underlines? I would normally just stick to what my tutor advises but there are somethings she has backtracked or not been sure of so it makes me a bit unsure. Thank you in advance, Sophia

  • Hi Sophia,
It's been a while since I did my level 3 but I'm assuming the level 5 guidance is broadly similar!
    1. I would use General Manager the first time with (GM) after, and then refer to it as GM from then on.
    2. Yes I would have thought so.
    3. Up to you. I tended to write in the third person, but I think you can do either.
    4. In my level 5, the tutor said you could as it would be confidential, so I would go with the guidance your tutor has given you, unless you're in a highly regulated industry which is covered by other legislation (e.g. the secrets act!).
    5. Just use AC 1.1 otherwise the question will be counted in your word count.
    Good luck!

Hi Laura, Thank so much, I feel like once I get past this first assessment I will get the swing of it but currently I have so many questions and worries. I really appreciate your advice! Take care, Sophia

I was exactly the same. You do get the hang of it - ask lots of questions. Your tutor's there to support you Slight smile
