Why do you think experienced senior HR professionals from the public sector often struggle to secure interviews for private sector HR leadership roles?

Is it a perception issue, concerns around commercial exposure, differences in CV language, or something else entirely?

As someone with experience across HR, organisational development, workforce capability and leadership development, I'm curious to hear the views of both recruiters and hiring managers who work across sectors.

  • From my experience in HR leadership across different industries, I believe this is often a combination of perception, recruitment bias, and how professional experience is presented.

Senior HR professionals from the public sector bring valuable expertise in governance, workforce planning, employee relations, and organizational development. However, private sector employers often prioritize commercial awareness, agility, cost efficiency, and measurable business outcomes.

The challenge is not necessarily a lack of capability but how transferable skills and achievements are recognized and communicated.

I also believe employers should look beyond sector backgrounds and assess leadership capability, adaptability, and strategic thinking.

Ultimately, effective HR leadership is about understanding business needs, managing people effectively, and delivering measurable results, regardless of the sector.
