Level 3 to Level 5

Hello,

Looking for some advice on how to progress. I am currently studying the new Level 3 CIPD qualification. When I enrolled on the course I had initially intended to start on the Level 5 course, but was quite strongly guided away from it by the advisor as I would need to be currently working in a specialist HR role and would need access to company HR data to complete my studies. She advised the new courses had been made more difficult and the role and data were very much prerequisites.

I am currently a line manager for around 50 employees including 3 other managers. I work in primarily in operations in a large hospitality environment, and I am unsure if the company would support me in the above to allow me to move on to Level 5 after I complete level 3 if the advice I have received is accurate.

I have many years of generalist HR experience especially in employee relations but would like to move to a specialist role. Could anyone advise if I can study level 5 in my current role, or offer any general advice on how to proceed.

Many thanks for you help

John

  • Hi John

I was advised to complete level 3 first (and did so), however to be honest if you're in this role it sounds like L5 would make more sense. I don't regret doing the level 3 before I started 5, however it does feel like the content in both, from my provider at least, is actually very similar and the assignments are just set out differently.

I have not needed to provide any company data at all for my studies, and in my L5 group there are a number of students who are not in an HR role.

Happy to talk further if it will help.
  • Thank you, that is good to hear. I also don't regret starting at Level 3, based on what you say it will offer a good grounding for the Level 5 qualification later on.
