Transitioning back into HR from teaching

Hi All,

Advice on how best to make a transition back into HR after 6 year's in Education, as a secondary school teacher. I am an Assoc CIPD member. Prior to getting into education, my last role was as a HR generalist / advisor with roles in the retail and hospitality sector.

I'm currently in an a Middle leadership role within a school, which simply means i'm a head of a department. I've always been passionate about L&D but never felt i had the courage to purse this route when starting out in HR. I've thrived in education and got involved in coaching and mentoring of newly qualified teachers, as well as performance management.

My first question, is 6 years too long out of HR, i know it would be a lot for an ER based role, but is it likely to be a huge factor for L & D?

What sort of roles/companies should i be applying for, i'm not too fussed by titles, but know my experiences and skills are above L & D assistant level.

How best to sell my transferable skills at interviews etc.

I'm already research tonnes on here, due to visit specialist hr recruitment agency soon, and hoping attend a few networking events.

Any advice or opportunities to be mentored by an senior HR or L&D expert would be most welcomed

Thanks.

  • Hi and welcome, Erusi

Have you looked at the Work-Based Learning Sector? Hospitality etc training provision for apprentices especially was as I recall often very well structured and resourced and probably still is. And because it’s significantly Government Funded and inspected by OFSTED, L&D qualifications and pedagogical expertise tends imho to be given far more emphasis than within general workforce L&D, within which WBL probably has far greater prominence anyhow than it used to have, what with apprenticeship levy etc etc.

With being able to offer educational expertise into the industrial and commercial L&D sector, you might be potentially well placed to sell yourself to those who run things there.

  • Thanks so much for your timely and detailed feedback, David.

I hadn’t considered WBL sector, I will do now.

I’ll be sure to ask for further advice/update with feedback when I can.

    Best Regards,

    Erusi
