Hi All,

I'm currently studying the foundational HR course and for months now I've been applying for volunteer/ and HR assistant roles to no avail so far. I strongly suspect that my CV is just not drawing in the right attention. But how do I change this. With absolutely no HR background experience I want to find creative ways to improve my CV so that potential employees will give me a chance/callback/interview.

Does anyone have any suggestions on key words and terms/ or cv structures that could improve employers responsiveness.

Hi Fiona, Do you have something in Derbyshire? Iam facing similar struggle. Currently Iam doing CIPD level 5 and have done Masters in HRM.

Just in general its worth everyone remembering that much/most volunteering in HR departments probably qualifies the person as an employee / worker and so probably must result in paying the NMW.

Hi Yeta, If your claiming some sort of benefit then you can only volunteer for non profit organisations. If this is the case i would contact local charity organisations to see if they can accommodate you in any way.

Charities are the best places to contact, check if you have a Marie Curie head office near you, I’m sure there is one in London... that’s where I volunteered and it really helped with my CV

Many charities outsource their HR to external organisations these days but I am sure if you structure your CV around transferable skills and offer a firm commitment of time you would be offered experience.

I recruited volunteers in various positions for many years, including law, social work, childcare students with great success. Have you searched on volunteering job boards and websites?

Hi Jean, Thanks for the suggestion about my CV. I've looked on Doit.org but rarely see any HR volunteer roles. When I do apply for HR volunteer I don't seem to get a response. I'm going to revise my CV.
