Level 5 in Learning and Development - no experience in the field

Dear all,

I am currently starting studying the level 5 in Learning and Development with ICS.

I have a master degree in Event Management and a Bachelor in Management and Development.

I have a year experience as a Project Manager Assistant in an event company and a year experience in sales.

I have always been passionate by Learning and Development and as the Level 5 corresponds to the undergraduate level, I thought that I could directly study it without studying the Level 3.

Did I make the right choice ?

Could somebody help me regarding the steps to follow to start my career in L&D after having my qualification ?

Thank you very much.

Kind regards,

  • Hi Lucile,

I just finished the Level 5 in l&D with ICS! Good luck with your studies.
I only had the CIPD Level 3 certificate in HR and very limited exposure to the field when I started, however it did not impact my learning too much- the metrics Unit (the research one) might be a bit more difficult when you don't work in L&D but your tutor will explain expectations and work with you to find a good topic.
    Hope this helps!

    Hi Vanessa,

I would like to thank you very much for your help.
I am less worried and even more motivated.
Could you please kindly advise me or share your experience on how to start looking for jobs, contacting companies, volunteering in L&D when you do not have experience in this field :)
I am passionate about L&D and cannot wait to start my career but I do not know where to start...
What are the job roles you are applying for at the moment: L&D advisor, L&D consultant, L&D officer?
Do you think that starting by doing an internship will be valuable when you have a certificate but no experience?

Thank you very much again for your kind help!

    Hi Lucile,

I think any experience is valuable- I'm in a coordinator role right now and it gives me a lot of exposure and practical experience in the field; am hoping to move into a specialist/advisor role soon. My advice would be, if you see a job description you'd enjoy doing, go for it! And don't focus on your "lack" of experience, but rather on what skills you can bring and highlight you studied on your own, that shows drive.
Volunteering can be a good way to apply your skills and gain experience while you job hunt too! Have a look at your local CIPD branch and browse volunteer websites for roles.
