Employers prefer people with experience over my degree in HRM

I am very keen on starting my career in HR, however, many organisations prefer people with experience over my degree in HRM. After so many applications my application for a grad scheme in HR and 2 others in general management landed me interviews, however, I didn't pass the assessment centre. Can anyone give me advice in starting off my HR career?  I just feel like it is very competitive and I am really trying hard but all I am receiving is rejection.

  • Hi Frank.
HR is no different to any profession in terms of being competitive. If you are flexible in terms of work location it might be an idea to check out the labour market in other cities. I would also look at vacancies in smaller companies. In my experience you get exposed to a lot more situations in a small organisation where you are part of a smaller team. In bigger companies you tend to be more specialised. I would also consider getiing interview skills training. Its a good investment in your career.

  • Tell us more about the degree and what area are you in?
  • Get your foot in the door.
    As for the degree?
Who would you rather have flying your holiday plane? A pilot with a couple of experience flying a plane or someone who has just passed their commercial pilots licence?.
