Retaining a role back into HR

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advise on how to get back into a HR role. From 2011 I worked as a HR assistance for 2 companies up until 2014 I then switched into a more operational role of which I trained to be a manager of which I am now a site manager. I comepleted my lever 5 CIPD 2016-2017 and along the way have been to local CIPD events to keep my knowledge fresh with areas such as employment law.

The feedback I have been getting is I need at least 6 month experience working in HR which I have and I deal with Employee relations etc every day. I am also mentoring other colleagues with their development and supporting my region with HR queries as our HR is all I head office.

I would be greatful if everyone’s thoughts as I would like to get back into HR. Ideally I would like to start as an advisor as I have been an assistant in the past and do not want to feel I am taking a step back after then going onto to being different levels of management.

Thank you

  • Hi Chloe, It sounds like you have a good background of HR and also business /operations management experience and CIPD qualifications which is great.

My advice would be to apply apply and apply. Also I would definitely be contacting and speaking to specialist HR recruitment agencies. There are a number of them in London and are worth reaching out to. I returned to work following a 12 year career break and spent 3-4 months looking and applying. I secured a role last month in a role I am really happy in. I am contracting via Oakleaf Partnership and they have been very professional so I thoroughly recommend them if you are in the London area.

Be specific on the type of role you are looking for and they will contact you when something comes up. Don't be afraid of going for interviews even if the role is not exactly what you are looking for as interviews are good experience and a way to increase confidence when job searching. You will know when you meet an employer if they are the type of company that will be able to give the role and exposure you are looking for.

Continue to attend the CIPD networking meetings.

Lastly, get a mentor or business coach. They are invaluable.

    Good Luck!
