Bigger or smaller company for progression?

Hi,

I have got on the HR career ladder by landing my first job as a HR Assistant for a large global organisation with 400 employees after taking my CIPD level 3.

Due to the nature of the business it is a very fast paced environment leaving little time for me to develop my HR skills.

I would like to ask those with experience whether people have found more success working in a larger company or a smaller company where you are leading the HR function?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Niketa,

I started my first HR role in a shared services function which was very similar to you, lots of box ticking and not a lot of room for training. I did learn quite a lot from a theoretical standpoint but didn't get a chance to do it in practice.

I was there for about a year then moved to a small company where it was just myself and a HR manager. That was for about 2 years; in which time I did learn quite a bit from researching myself but no training as such.
I'm now at a new employer which is slightly bigger. There are about 4 of us in the HR department and my learning in just the 7 weeks I have been here is phenomenal. It really does depend on the company and how much they are willing to support your learning.

Whichever way you go, experience on your CV is key to new/higher level roles. As Keith said, they both have their advantages and disadvantages - it all depends on the Company.
