Bigger or smaller company for progression?

Hi,

I have got on the HR career ladder by landing my first job as a HR Assistant for a large global organisation with 400 employees after taking my CIPD level 3.

Due to the nature of the business it is a very fast paced environment leaving little time for me to develop my HR skills.

I would like to ask those with experience whether people have found more success working in a larger company or a smaller company where you are leading the HR function?

Thank you in advance.

  • There are pro's and cons to both. I prefer smaller companies as it gives you the full generalist exposure that you need in comparison to larger organisations where you can sometimes fall into the trap of being 'pigeon' holed. On the contrary, I enjoy bigger corporations, as the team size is larger and do love the element of working in teams.
