Starting a career in HR

Hi, I've worked in retail for 11years as a Deputy manager but HR has always been part of my role.

I have experience on the following

-Inductions

-Processing leavers/ new starts

-Disciplinary (conducting and taking notes)

-Rayroll

-Dismissal

-Recruitment process/selection

-Wage to sales

However because I've never had a HR title I am finding it hard to be short listed for an interview.

Where do I start and how can I sell myself?

What type of roles are you applying for and have you asked for feedback on your applications?

Maybe asking for feedback is a starting point. Also, are you applying directly or through an agency? Signing up with an agency and getting feedback from them on how to tailor your CV might help as well. You could also link in with your local CIPD branch and see if there's help or support available there. Another route (if you have time available) is to see if there's anywhere that could offer you some volunteering work in a HR area to build up some relevant experience.

There's been quite a few posts on starting a career in HR on the forums - if you have a look at some of those threads I'm sure they'll have some good ideas that you can use too.

    Hope that helps.
