Hr termination

Hello all.

I have had a bit of bad news. My company feels HR is no longer required in our UK office, specially a full time position and have terminated my contract. I am deeply sadden by this, but at the same time not surprised as this has confirmed my fears.

The trouble is I am still studying for my CIPD diploma Level 5 under an apprenticeship. Although I was looking for a new role anyway who will support me with this before the news, I am feeling the pressure now as once I have left my current role, I have no choice but to put my apprenticeship on hold. I was struggling to find a role who will support me before I was terminated. Now I am feeling it is going to be nearly impossible.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?  

Please can anyone offer me some advice or perhaps anyone who will know anyone who is recruiting. 

I appreciate any help from anyone.

  • I'm so sorry you're in this situation Shelley. It's a really difficult thing to deal with and I hope you've got some good, supportive people in your life who will help in person.

    In relation to future employers, I can only speak for my perspective - but I would view someone mid-apprenticeship positively and wouldn't see that as any kind of negative, if I were handling your application. It shows that you're hard working, willing to put in the effort to support your own career, and in a manner that is very cost effective for an employer. I really hope that this is what you find when you go to the market.

    A setback for you, but maybe try your best to regard it  as a potential opportunity!
    Suggest if you haven't already seeking guidance from your learning provider. Also, maybe your local CIPD Branch.

    As you may know, making apprentices redundant isn't generally regarded as anything like good practice and in certain circumstances you may have some redress against your ex-employers. It depends on the documentation completed when you started along with possibly a few other things. Your learning provider might be able to advise or a law centre or similar or come back here if needs be

  • Hi David. Thank you for the feedback. My learner is already aware and is in full support with me. The good news is that my provider at Next step Apprenticeship has their own recruitment agency who specialise in finding positions that would support the programs they offer. Nothing has come up yet but my name is well known to them. I have attempted to reach out to the CIPD branch HR team for advice but I haven't had any responses. Thanks again for the your advice, David.
