It might be worth looking at CIPD's Member-to-Member mentoring scheme, it may be of some use to you in terms of getting CV feedback and looking at your progression.
A really useful way to look at different roles within HR is to find someone who works in that area eg L&D, analytics etc and have a chat with them. This way you can hear about the good/bad and think if the reality matches how you wish to spend your time.
