Career change in to HR - opportunities

Hello everyone,

After a bit of advice. I'm an experienced hospitality manager who has been heavily involved with various HR type activities over the past decade or so. Last year I also completed by CIPD Level 5.

I'm really struggling to find any opportunities to change careers fully into an HR role. Does anyone have any good advice for the best places to look? I'd be willing to take on a more junior role around my current job if it could be done part-time/remote.

Thanks

  • A good starting point could be to actively participate in your local CIPD branch, it is possible that your next employer belongs to that branch.

Also, make sure your LinkedIn page is focused on HR stuff and engage with as many HR people as possible.
  • Hi Paul,

I was a hospitality manager for 12 years, then after doing my CIPD L5 and applying for well over 100 HR positions, I finally convinced a company to take a chance on me as a HR administrator. I started applying to jobs whilst doing my L5 and was offered a position roughly 8 months after finishing (so roughly 18-20 months) and had to take a significant pay cut, but it was worth it to be where I am now.

I would just keep applying and try to get your foot in the door somewhere, as you say consider a junior role and part time for experience. My first role was in a family run business, I am not sure if that makes much difference but they seemed to be the ones I was getting interviews with. Good luck with your search.
