Advice on a Career Shift into HR

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice and support.

Due to health and disability challenges, I haven’t worked much in the past five years, but I’m now really motivated to return to work and build a career in HR. Before this, I taught internationally in several countries and at UK universities, worked in event management for a health charity, and had a wide range of admin roles in law firms, hospitals, councils and universities. I've also worked in learning design for a large company.

Because of my health, I’m looking mainly for remote roles (I live in Carmarthen and don't drive due to my disabilities), and I'm struggling a little with how to present my recent gap on CVs and applications.

I’d also love tips on finding remote HR opportunities or ways to build experience and references, as volunteer roles I've found ask for very experienced HR professionals.

I’d be really grateful for any advice or suggestions — thanks so much for reading!

  • hi there, I’ve experienced the same issue and after three years working with my doctors, I was in a much better position and able to return to work although it had to be fully remote also. I struggled to find anything HR related (after years as an HR manager before ill health). I finally applied for the civil service who have been amazing and fully understand my disabilities. I’ve been given a fully remote role as a team manager which has been a great starting block again. I plan to apply for internal HR roles when they become available as I now have an agreed work from home role. I would suggest, based on my own experience, that you apply to a company you are happy with then attempt to make internal moves into another HR role. good luck.
