Coronavirus: Your workplace questions

At this difficult time, we'd like to offer people managers (and others) who are not CIPD Members an opportunity to ask questions about their specific workplace challenges.

We hope that collectively, the Community will feel able to chip in with guidance and signpost support and resources where these exist.

Thank you.

  • I have a question regarding furlough, apologies if this has been asked but I have scrolled through lots of information and can’t find the answer:
Due to the business nature (hospitality) all staff have been furloughed, Letters were sent to all employees asking for their agreement, the letter sent to the salaried employees stated that their wages would be topped up to 100%, all managers signed and returned these letters by the cut off date Sunday and the furlough was submitted.
Today the higher management have had a rethink and sent an email saying salaried have the option to either use 2 weeks annual leave and be paid the 100% or not and only receive 80%.
As I am furloughed I was not part of that meeting but struggling to advise colleagues who have contacted me as my reading of the scheme is that annual leave cannot be used and that the letter they signed was contractual and therefore subject to employment legislation which would not be something that could be withdrawn on a whim, any advice would be greatly appreciated
