At this difficult time, we'd like to offer people managers (and others) who are not CIPD Members an opportunity to ask questions about their specific workplace challenges.

We hope that collectively, the Community will feel able to chip in with guidance and signpost support and resources where these exist.

Thank you.

    In reply to Kim:

Hi Kim, they should not be mutually exclusive - an employee on furlough can claim Universal Credit if they qualify. Here's the gov.uk employee guidance: www.gov.uk/.../covid-19-guidance-for-employees
  • I would really be keen to hear from others and CIPD about any resources or guidance for supporting employees who will lose someone due to COVID-19, and how best to support in situations where employees cannot physically attend hospitals/funerals.

Is there anyone thinking ahead who has published specific guidance?
  • In reply to Lucy:

I hadn't but will check them out, thank you.
  • JOB RETENTION SCHEME

I was wondering if you knew whether you could furlough someone who has just handed in their notice? My plan is to furlough a couple of staff from the 1st however one has given me their resignation letter today. Can this person still be furloughed?

    Many thanks.
  • Temporary homeworking question - just been reading through the policy on HR Inform and it is suggesting that employees are paid an amount to cover electricity, heating costs etc. Is anyone doing this and is there a fair amount I can suggest to employers?
  • Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked already. I've just been doing some reseach around furlough leave and a firm of solicitors are advising to complete a HR1 form if more than 20 people are under consultation. Is anyone else doing this?
  • I have a question regarding furlough, apologies if this has been asked but I have scrolled through lots of information and can’t find the answer:
Due to the business nature (hospitality) all staff have been furloughed, Letters were sent to all employees asking for their agreement, the letter sent to the salaried employees stated that their wages would be topped up to 100%, all managers signed and returned these letters by the cut off date Sunday and the furlough was submitted.
Today the higher management have had a rethink and sent an email saying salaried have the option to either use 2 weeks annual leave and be paid the 100% or not and only receive 80%.
As I am furloughed I was not part of that meeting but struggling to advise colleagues who have contacted me as my reading of the scheme is that annual leave cannot be used and that the letter they signed was contractual and therefore subject to employment legislation which would not be something that could be withdrawn on a whim, any advice would be greatly appreciated
  • In reply to Claire:

Hi Claire, the gov.uk website can help with this and suggests employers can pay £4 per week without the need for keeping any records, but this does have some tax implications for employersand employees:

    In reply to Beth:

Hi Beth... have you seen this terrific resource shared by Keith?

  • Re online training, The HMRC states:

However, if workers are required to for example, complete online training courses whilst they are furloughed, then they must be paid at least the NLW/NMW for the time spent training, even if this is more than the 80% of their wage that will be subsidised.

Can I ask how others are dealing with this?

    Many thanks!
  • In reply to Anwen Howells:

Hi Anwen, I am in a similar position and have paid the employee (who worked for one week only and started on 16th March) up to end of March. They then received a letter to state they had to self isolate. I have been given conflicting advice. One person is saying that the employee should be paid SSP going forward but our payroll company is saying we can't pay SSP because they are not sick. Regards, Julie
  • In reply to Marek:

Thanks Marek, that section on furloughed workers on the gov website is new so I greatly appreciate you pointing me to it.
  • In reply to Megan:

Hi Megan I found this link and wonder if that is any use to you. It seems to have some resources on the web page lbforum.org.uk/.../
  • In reply to Carol:

Just to update - Garage is now closed by police and everyone furloughed.
