Coronavirus: Your workplace questions

At this difficult time, we'd like to offer people managers (and others) who are not CIPD Members an opportunity to ask questions about their specific workplace challenges.

We hope that collectively, the Community will feel able to chip in with guidance and signpost support and resources where these exist.

Thank you.

One of my clients (restaurant) will run out of money to furlough employees, they want to lay people off and use furlough to pay the notice period in June. Is this an option?

I am a little unsure of what you are trying to do here. DO you mean make them redundant in which case it may well be possible to use furlough money to pay some of the notice payment due to them (the guidance isnt crystal clear on this )

Or do you mean lay them off formerly using the existing legislation with minimum payments?
