Looking to volunteer - Bradford

Hi, I am a recent MA HRM graduate. I have previous HR experience (from a few years ago). I currently work as Assistant Manager in a Student Accommodation and looking for where I can volunteer 2 days a week (to refresh my HR experience) in preparation for getting a full-time HR position. Regards, Maureen

  • Look for local charities, community interest companies and community benefit societies. These organizations are in a position to provide meaningful HR experience on a voluntary basis. Any organization with more than a few dozen employees is likely to have organic HR or have engaged a consultant to support them. So you want organizations with 12-20 staff, probably still in the start-up phase of operations but not necessarily in the case of a charity.

Give them a call and try to speak to a Director, MD or CEO. Clearly articulate your qualifications, the services you can offer, how many days per week you can offer them and for how long. Be realistic and set a reasonable cut-off date (say, three months).

There will likely be opportunities to set up HR policies, review contracts of employment, look at people management practice and most likely deal with a few minor employee relations issues. If things start getting serious (big employee relations issues) then point them in the direction of a local consultancy and slowly back away from the dumpster fire.
