Buying and selling holidays

Hi, currently looking at the pro's and cons of offering/adapting a buy and sell holiday procedure. What are your thoughts? Have you got any previous experiences that you can share? Is anyone willing to share their current policy?

  • We buy and sell up to a maximum of 5 days from an entitlement of 27.. Purchase and sale is based on a contractual salary / 227 to get the daily rate.

Works well for us and is popular with staff.
  • We don’t offer a selling holidays option. We promote all staff to take their full annual leave entitlement for their own wellbeing. There is also a substantial cost to organisations in terms of any annual leave left unused. This is just my isolated views though from my experience. It may work in other circumstances and surroundings.
  • Staff are allowed to sell holidays at the standard rate up to a maximum of 5 days although we have allowed more in exceptional circumstances. Staff can't buy holidays but are allowed to take a maximum of 10 days from next years entitlement. If a member of staff leaves with a negative holiday balance it is deducted from their final pay.
  • Hello Jayne,

Our company doesn't offer to buy holidays back and instead permit up to five days to be carried over to the following year. Regular time off is encouraged and supported by managers and Business Comms.

Employees also have the option to purchase up to five days each year as an additional benefit at their own salary day rate.

    Thanks Nikki
