We have introduced a health care benefit that is a benefit in kind i.e. the organisation pays the insurance premium for employees, and the tax for this is deducted from employees' pay on a monthly basis.
Having taken advice on this we will continue to make the tax deduction during the occupational and statutory maternity pay period, but it remains unclear how to approach this when an employee is in the unpaid portion of their maternity leave.

Thanks Elizabeth. I hadn't thought of it like that. Makes sense. We'll go back to our payroll provider who should be able to process this for us even if they need to refer it up, as it must be a fairly common scenario. Have a good bank holiday!
