Request for Feedback: Scotland World Cup Additional Bank Holiday

Good afternoon,

I’m looking for some insight from fellow HR professionals in Scotland regarding the additional bank holiday that has been announced for June this year due to Scotland qualifying for the World Cup.

Our employment contracts state that bank holidays are not automatically granted unless specifically listed, so contractually we are not obliged to provide this extra day off. Despite this, we are currently reviewing our approach and considering whether to offer it as an additional day’s leave, allowing employees to book off the 15th June, or swap it with another day.

Before making a final decision, I’d really appreciate hearing what other organisations are planning to do. From what I’ve heard locally, there seems to be a mixture of approaches, some companies intend to grant it, others won’t be offering it, and some haven’t yet decided.

What is your organisation planning to do about the additional June bank holiday?

  • Grant it as an extra paid day
  • Allow employees to take it from their annual leave
  • Not recognise it at all
  • Something else?

    you are correct in what you say and not all employers will be able to grant this day to colleagues or indeed want to.  

    In your assessment to help you to get to the right decision to should consider both the pro’s which could include the benefits to colleagues as well as the business eg happier/engaged workforce and the cons eg service impacts . I think you are starting to do this from what you have written. 

    I understand the event itself is early on Sunday and therefore this is not about giving colleagues the time to be part of the actual event itself but the following day. 

    Some considerations to as part of your decision making: what would be the cost to the business of supporting the time off, what would be your impact to service/service users, optics of not granting the day to colleagues in terms of the type of organisation you are part of and its values.  

    As a happy medium, some employers have said they will make effort to support colleagues having the time off but by means of allowing the use of annual leave. This has also been caveated with the fact they cannot compromise service delivery in the event that many want the day off. 

    I hope you are able to work through to a final position that balances the needs of colleagues as well as the needs of the business. 

    There have been a few organisations that have been public on their position on this, so you should be able to pick-up examples of what others are doing.
