Sick pay for hourly paid employees

We are currently looking to review the sickness benefit that we pay to our hourly paid employees and wanted to see what others are doing, so if anyone is willing to share that would be great.

We are a manufacturing company, and the hourly paid employees are production operatives for us.

If possible I would like to know if you pay just SSP, or company sick pay?  If company sick pay at what rate and for how long?  Also does it just cover serious illness or all illness?  If only SSP is paid do you take into consideration any additional payment if someone is having an operation?

thanks very much

  • Hi Sarah, we are also a manufacturing company in the construction industry so follow the guidance of the Working Rule Agreement - a pdf can be saved quite easily if you search it on google. In short, our operatives are subject to three waiting days (so no pay) then SSP and OSP thereafter. The OSP payable is currently £21.42 per day which is applicable to the qualifying days (variable dependent on operatives normal working hours, ours is Mon-Fri). Qualifying conditions e.g. length of service also dictated by the WRA.
