Employee Engagement Survey

Hi There,

We are planning to run an employee engagement survey to understand how people generally feel about working in the company, including what they like and what they feel could be improved.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience with engagement surveys and any advice or recommendations you might have. In particular, would you suggest using mostly open-ended questions, multiple-choice questions, or a combination of both?

I’ve never run a survey like this before, so any guidance would be very helpful. We have several departments across the company, and I was thinking of asking the same core questions to everyone so that we can compare the results and identify any common themes or differences between departments.

Any suggestions on how best to structure the survey, the types of questions to include, or things to avoid would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Nunzia, we run employee engagement surveys twice a year, mid-year is a pulse survey consisting of 6 questions, and end of year is a full survey consisting of 10 to 12 questions.  I run our surveys through our HR system (Sage HR), since starting the surveys a couple of years back I can see the team have progressively added more meat to the bones of their answers, using a combo of multi choice together with a comments option per question, with the last question being comment only, the feedback we receive is constructive, and honest.  I then share the results and verbatim anonymous comments with the team in our monthly magazine which I produce, to ensure transparency, and to encourage conversation - together with an action plan to address any areas of concern, where applicable.  Maxine
