People Advisor – Band 5 | Interview Tips

Hello everyone,

I’m attending a People Advisor interview next week for a Band 5 role within an NHS Trust in England, and I’d really appreciate any interview tips or advice from fellow CIPD members who have experience with similar roles.

The role covers areas including employee relations, disciplinary and grievance matters, absence management, advising and coaching managers, employment legislation, trade union relationships and People projects.

I have substantial previous HR experience, including operational HR and employee relations, as well as current NHS experience, but this will be my first NHS People Advisor interview.

For anyone who has interviewed for a similar NHS People Advisor/HR Advisor role:
• What types of questions or scenarios were you asked?
• Were there any technical employment-law or NHS-specific questions?
• How much emphasis was placed on competency/values-based questions?
• Is there anything you wish you had prepared more thoroughly?

Any tips, experiences or resources would be greatly appreciated. Blush

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi, there. I work in NHS HR. I'm not currently recruiting for a Band 5, so I don't think I've got a conflict of interest!

Your clues will be in the person specification. Anything in that which is marked as "I" should be tested at Interview. You are likely, though, to be asked to talk to how you managed a complex or contentious piece of employee relations casework; how you managed a disagreement with a colleague; participation in the delivery of training and education of managers etc.

It should be very competency-focused with maybe one or two questions on values.

So far as preparation goes, I strongly recommend making notes on your experiences: cases, conflicts, projects, challenges... just a couple of lines to prompt memory. So when you're asked for an example, if it doesn't come straight to mind, you can quickly check your notes and find the one that fits the situation best.
