Should HR encourage employees to engage with the local community?

Have you seen any benefit from staff engaging with local communities?

A House of Lords select committee on citizenship and civic engagement has published an inquiry and quoted evidence given by CIPD's Chief Community Officer, Katerina Rudiger: https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201719/ldselect/ldcitizen/118/11802.htm

Katerina mentioned that employers who encourage employees to engage with their local community (e.g. through volunteering) benefit from increased:

  • Staff engagement
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Skills development (e.g. communication skills and team working)
  • Better understanding of the communities they operate in (including their customers)
