Leadership training for middle managers in special needs independent school

Hello,

We are a small charity independent school for special needs children.

We have some very dedicated staff but our 'middle managers' really need some Leadership training, to equip them with the skills to manage their teams, deal with any conflict, improve their communication and general leadership skills.

We don't have the budgets to spend on expensive off-site training, or to bring any trainers in.

Can anyone recommend some in-house training packages available we could use and deliver in-house, any useful resources etc.

Many thanks in advance!

Regards

Ellie

  • This isn't something you can realistically do "in house". You can't have the Head Teacher swot up on some leadership textbooks and then deliver life-changing management training. It will be trite, transparent and all impact will disappear without trace.

Instead, try to articulate the cost to the business over the next 24 months of *not* doing the training. Anything you spend that turns out to be less than that is therefore money well spent.

Having said that, you should get in touch with local training providers. The European Social Fund is still running, so there is funding for qualifying businesses (including small charities!) to get access to funded training at no more cost than losing attendees from the business for a day a week for however long it takes to complete the course. ILM (Institute of Leadership & Management) courses at Levels 2, 3 and 4 are great to equip middle managers with some fundamental tools to manage more effectively and you can then think about more tailored training once that has bedded in and you get some useful feedback from your management team.
  • Not sure if you've looked at (or can access) ISQAM courses via HMC? We put five of our middle managers through level 1 last year, and they've really appreciated it. Two have gone on to level 2 this year and another two intend to. I'd have a look if you can.
