Sickness Absence - Teachers providing cover work

Good evening all

I am new to the community and this is my first post!  This topic can be quite a contentious one in my workplace and would appreciate your advice on this please...

When Teaching Staff are absent from work due to illness (any length of time) should they be expected/asked to provide full cover work for the supply teachers coming in to cover their absence?

Is this a cut and dry NO!  Or are there exceptions to the rule?

Thanking you in advance for your advice.

Best wishes

Melissa

  • Some of our teachers do - a bit of an unwritten expectation (they should have planned for the lesson they are teaching so should be able to send planning work for that first day of sickness. When its longer term they wouldn't be expected to (some would if for instance they had a sprained ankle for example and felt fine otherwise) but if you had someone off say with depression then it wouldn't be as likely.
