Trade union time and teachers directed time

Hi all In an Academy Trust we have a union representative that is stating that Union facility times and work must take place during working time, which is when staff would be in class teaching. Is this correct? And in addition, would trade union facility time for teachers count towards their directed time of 1265 per academic year? The context; staff representatives and the union have requested a meeting (and time out of teaching), which due to this equating to 25% of the teaching staff, we have negotiated a 30 min early release from . The impact of releasing all would have a significant impact on the teaching and cause disruption for the students in a small school. Is this reasonable? Thanks in advance for reading and advice.

  • Hi Danielle

Facility time is time off from a job to enable a rep to carry out their trade union role. Are you saying 25% of your teachers are union reps? If they are only members of a union, then they are not entitled to facility time.

FYI - Our reps organise union meetings at the end of the school day, after directed time, and we provide a room.
