Compulsory retirement age policy

Hi All,

I've been under the assumption (probably because of UK law) that there was no compulsory retirement age in Ireland or that companies in Ireland could not require their employees to retire when they reach a specific age. It turns out that it is possible to set out such policy in Ireland.

We currently do not have one in Ireland, but our HR consultants are suggesting we implement it (it would also require amending contracts - and potentially consulting everyone and seeking their consent - as this is not mentioned in current contracts of employment). Can someone think of any risks to the business if a company does not have a compulsory retirement age policy, apart from the obvious of not being able to use reaching retirement age as a valid reason to let someone go?
