Advice on Training courses besides CIPD

Hello All,

I am sorry if this question has been answered before. I have a very straight-forward and plain question. I am a 35 year old male who has worked in 4 big corporate names or Fortune 500 companies. I have worked in Projects team, Support team, Contact centre, Application Support and also in Training department.

My line managers and Training heads found that I am a natural teacher and have all the attributes of a good coach and a mentor. I was chosen to provide product training to new-joinees and have always been part of In-House training department for refresher trainings to internal staff. Wherever I worked, I ended up being a Trainer / Mentor; even for ad hoc trainings without any preparation whatsoever and am glad to say my sessions and methods were lauded.

Unfortnately and very sadly, no company ever took interest in my professional development. I have worked for 8 years in India and now have been in UK since last 5 years working as a Assistant Project Manager.

Here, one of the Project Managers told me about getting a qualification from CIPD L&D. However, the cost of the course is huge. Something I can't afford currently.

So, my humble question is, are there any other courses / qualifications / certifications please in the market - acquiring or completing which will help me get the job I need i.e. Trainer / Assessor? Or how do I say in the interviews that I am very good at Training and would like to work in such department?

Sorry, it's become long post. And I do appreciate any advice.

Many Thanks,

Haneef Md

  • This would interest me as well, as I cannot afford L7but would like to progress in my career
  • Look up information about PTTLS and DTTLS (they have a new name now but these acronyms will help you find them). They are level 3 and level 5 qualifications.

  • Hi Haneef,

I think it depends what you expect to gain from the qualification. If you are expecting to manage an L&D function then many organisations may expect a CIPD L&D qualification. However, if you just want something to say you can run training sessions something like a 2-day 'train the trainer' course would be sufficient. I did one of these courses and found they provided lots of useful tips, and gave the opportunity to practice (which you probably don't need given your experience but you will probably learn something on a good course).

Personally I think that your experience should say it all and a qualification shouldn't be necessary but I know many organisations use the candidate's qualifications to help with shortlisting.

The train the trainer course I did was excellent, it was run by the College of Public Speaking.

    Thank you Ms. Williams.
These two courses will definitely be on my cards. Have saved the names in my personal notepad.

    Hi Anna,
Thanks a million for taking time out in writing a detailed response. I do appreciate it. I will definitely go for trainer the trainer to start with. However, I am still thirsty for any CIPD-related certificate that is in-line with my needs and also gives me an edge in the market. Say I want a CIPD tag. I am adamant because the way some Institutions have esteem in the eyes of the Companies (employers), and the recognition and awe is crazy. I have seen it and felt it.
