Support for career development during a career break

A year ago I relocated my family to the states as my husband had a new role. I knew the visa restrictions meant I would be unable to work for a period of time, and so opted to start an MBA, as I had already gained my chartered status prior to leaving the UK. I am now half way through my MBA.

Sadly, my green card seems to be taking longer and longer. It looks like I will be unable to work for another 18-24 months.

I have kept myself incredibly busy with volunteering work in the community, studying and just getting stuck into our new life, but feel I would benefit from a more structured plan, and possibly a mentor.

We relocated with no support from my husband's employer, other than a pot of money, so I don't have any resources that large relocation organisations normally provide.

I would be incredibly grateful for any experiences of getting sane and motivated during a career break, and recommendations of books or forums, any USA based organisations worth connecting with ...in fact I would be grateful for anything!

  • Hi Lisa

If I were recruiting and received a CV from someone in your situation who had reached the end of the gap and was applying for a job with an MBA plus voluntary work experience, I would think you had made excellent use of your time. The only other thing I can think of is becoming an active member of the local equivalent of a CIPD branch.

Thank you Elizabeth. I am trying to connect with various HR organisations, its certainly not as easy as the CIPD!
  • Hi Lisa, adding to Elizabeth's comments I would also agree that a mentor would pay dividends. I wonder if you have had a look at the CIPD website for any signposting so just in case I've added below some website links for potential resources. The Learn section for the CIPD website is worth checking out particularly the section for finding a mentor and hopefully you will qualify. It's also worth checking out Personnel Today, HR Zone and Training Zone for useful resources and you may want to post this same question onto the discussion forums for the latter two websites. You won't lose anything! One other thing to consider is accessing some support from a life coach to help with chewing over your options and drawing up a plan so if that's something of interest please let me know as I can suggest a potential route. Good luck!

Hi Lisa I'd suggest connecting with SHRM (https://www.shrm.org/) and the APA (http://www.apa.org/) both appear to be involved in activities on the leading edge of HR.
