which level of HR role to apply for - HR Qualifications and studying - Careers Clinic

4 which level of HR role to apply for

Good Afternoon everyone,

This is my first time using or viewing the Careers Clinic, and I'll be very grateful for any advice.

Having paid for it myself, I am currently studying for CIPD Level 5 / Intermediate certificate, and my current job role is a Training Services Advisor (a role which is more focused unfortunately on compliance than L&D or anything HR related). My plan had been to complete the CIPD course then apply for a new role. However, my department has just been informed we're at risk, formal consultations begin next week and we're 99% certain to go. Given that I'm part way through my studies, what sort of role/s should I be looking to apply for? I have two years previous experience as an HR Advisor and also have an bachelor's degree in HRM.

Welcome to the communities

HR Advisor roles seem the most direct route into HR given your current role and previous experience. Generally people will give you credit for being well underway with your level 5 and that you are already experienced.

But I would also add that try not to get too hung up on titles and just look for roles that fit your experience and that you are excited about.

Hi Andrew,
I'm sorry to hear that your role is at risk of redundancy.
The broad band between what a HR Business Partner does in one company can be radically different to that in another. Same with HR Advisor, Manager, Director and so on, so try not to be too rigid in looking for a particular level role.

I'd concentrate on roles which will allow you to firm up your previous HR Advisor experience with what you've learned in any other roles you've been employed in as well as what you learned with your academic qualification.

Look at adverts/JD's for anything including HR Assistant through to HR Manager and see what you think suits you best.
