CIPD Level 5 is enough to get a Job?

I am currently working as an Assistant HR Manager. I do not hold a university degree, as I completed my education up to the 12th grade. However, I do have several certifications (though not specifically in HR).

I am now planning to pursue CIPD Level 5. My question is: if I aim to progress into a managerial-level HR role, would CIPD Level 5 alone be sufficient, or is having a degree essential—particularly in the UK job market?

I would appreciate any guidance. Thank you.

  • Hi Khizar, as you are already in a HR role, you will be building experience so doing your CIPD level 5 will give you a good balance of experience and qualifications.  I left school at 16 so don't have a first degree, but am now a Chartered Fellow with two postgraduate qualifications that I completely whilst working and have been working in HR leadership roles for about 15 years.

There are some organisations who are a little picky about having a first degree - particularly big universities, but most are focussed on CIPD and experience.

The other thing to start to do if you are not already is to collect examples of good outcomes you have delivered. Organisations want to know what difference you have made, and not just what you did. The CIPD Profession map is also great.

    I wish you every success.

  • Hi Teresa, thanks for the helpful comment! I really liked your point about highlighting the difference we've made rather than just what we did.

It made me think of a recent improvement I made at work. My company used to rely on sticky notes on desks to track visa renewals. I realized this was risky, so I created an AI workflow that tracks employee visa details, triggers automated reminders based on set criteria, and follows up if something is pending.

In your view, is this a solid example of a high-impact outcome, or is there a way I could highlight it even better?

  • Hi Khizar - I think that is a brilliant example
