Career move from Generalist to Comp And Ben

Hi All,

My first post here, have looked before and always found really good information on various topics. Great Forum!

So my question is how do I go about moving into compensation and benefits. What areas of study do I need or what exposure do I need to obtain as a first step.

  • Hi Margo, the first thing IMHO is to get  a clear understanding of what C&B can involve, because depending on the size of the organisation it can be massive or restricted

    I've attached a slide used to present to the HR team in a major multinational the areas to be covered in a series of internal training courses which I organised.

    The CIPD site can also give you a career map. The advanced technical stuff happens in large multinationals, and specific C&B roles rarely exist in companies of less than 3000-5000 staff. However, beyond 2000 staff generalist HR staff need a solid understanding of C&B....

    Is there a C&B activity (not full time job) in your current employer, and can you explore with your manager the possibility of taking on some responsibilities/projects as part of your development?

    In terms of training, the major (and specialist) consultancies have a wide range of courses.... As a starter I would suggest a 2 day overview, then follow up with two key areas which interface strongly with other HR activities :

    • job grading, salary structures
    • market positioning and remuneration of individual and collective jobs

    Thank you Ray for taking the time to provide that information. Yes I work for a large multinational, so I will start that development conversation with my manager and look into some further study options which will hopefully set me up if any opportunities arise.
