Career Advice on Transitioning from Generalist/Operational HR to OD/change management

Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to get some advice from experience professionals in the field of OD or change managers on transitioning HR& admin role (generalist type).

I am HR professional for 9 years, working in Pakistan and recently finished my CIPD L-5 Qualification. I explored various HR pathways for specialization, but OD is the only which attracts me for its impactful nature of work. Hence, I need guidance from experience professionals from OD and Change management to refer some essential skillset/knowledge area to properly transition into the role keeping in view the dynamics of labor market.

I am looking forward for some fruitful discussion here!!

  • Hello,

There are OD&D practitioners in the community who will be able to share advice and guidance on what to consider.

In the meantime, you may find it helpful to assess yourself against the Profession Map, focusing on the OD&D specialist area, as well as other related knowledge areas such as culture and behaviour.

This can help you identify your current knowledge, skills and behaviours, and provide development suggestions to support you in moving closer to your chosen career in OD&D/Change.

Building your own personal network online through LinkedIn may also be helpful, connecting with other OD practitioners.  Garin Roach is a great OD expert and gives an overview of A day in the life of an OD&D specialist | CIPD...

Wishing you all the best in the next steps of your career Slight smile

  • You have some great advice from  below and I would recommend Garin and his colleague Dani's podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/orgdev-with-distinction/id1555716451 to hear people talk about OD.

You might also like to join the EODF - it's the European Organisation Design Forum- but there is a US version too and the disciplines of Org Design and Org Development/ change are close sisters.

As well as looking at the CIPD career map and researching their libraries for interesting research on OD/ change, there are a number of thought leadership pieces that I would start to read, you could look at The Change Manager's Handbook Edited by Richard Smith et al and also Linda Holbeche and Mee-Yan Cheung-Jui who have written a seminal work called Organisation Development. Both are essential reading.

You can also follow people on LinkedIn writing about this and there are also a number of groups focused on change and organisational development you could also join. All will add to your learning.

You can also look at how you can use your current work to ask for projects that have more of a change focus so you build up your practical experience too. Good luck.
