HRMIS & Payroll

Good morning

We are currently a 14 school MAT (circa. 1000 staff) and although we previously utilised a platform (for both HR and Payroll) for a short period of time, we quickly moved away from them back to our previous payroll provider.  

Currently, we are out sourcing our payroll to an education specialist provider but this is not sustainable due to the poor quality of service we receive.  We also need to move to a HRMIS system due to our recent growth and potential for further growth and although payroll is not an immediate issue we need to resolve, we are looking at our options for 12-18 months down the line.

My questions for the community is, what HRMIS & Payroll systems do you currently use in your school/MAT; I'm struggling to find one that I don't hear mostly negative comments about and although I suspect we are expecting the system to work miracles, none of them will and perhaps we need to lower our expectations.  However, I am aware that implementation of these systems is never easy so it's going to take lots of hard work, time and capacity.

I would be really grateful if you could let me know which system you are currently using and any negative/positives and whether this has bought about any increased efficiencies within your HR teams.

    I work in an a 10 school MAT, with approx 800 staff/950 contracts and payroll is like a swear word to me!

    I've worked in companies previously with complex payroll matters and tax exemptions and never had the problems I have in schools! I'm finding it's a mixture of school staff not really understanding the need for good payroll practice, payroll providers' workers not understanding payroll anymore and essentially just being data entry clerks, and companies saying "hey we have an education specific system", which was either developed by a school worker with no idea of payroll or a payroll person with no idea of the sector.

    We have worked with Dataplan, Strictly Education, Moorepay and more recently Access but I'm in the process of looking yet again for another system due to them not providing the service that was advertised and general poor service which has resulted in an increase in workload for my internal payroll officer!

    Sorry not much help to you, but if I do come across any companies with positive feedback I will let you know!

    Thanks for your message, sorry it's taken so long for me to reply. I feel your pain re payroll and I'm glad to hear it's not just us with a HRMIS issue.

    I've received demos from a few different systems; Access, SAMPeople and EveryHR but none of the systems truly integrate between HR and payroll and they all have positives and negatives. I've come across EduPay lately and wondered what that was like but I can't seem to find anyone in education who has successfully implemented the system and can provide positive feedback.

    I'll continue my search for a decent HRMIS and if I come across anything, I'll also let you know.

    We use Cascade for HR and Payroll in our school. Not perfect, but workable. Very happy to chat about it offline if helpful.
