Recruitment in Ireland

Hi all

I work for a company based in England, who are looking to recruit an Engineer based in the Republic of Ireland. I don't really want to go down the agency route as I'd like to keep costs down but have no experience of recruiting in this area. I've done some research online, but would appreciate any local knowledge regarding job boards/ other avenues to consider? The role is a Service Engineer within the boiler industry.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Claire

You are contemplating employing a *foreigner* ?? - how could you! - we've just voted to keep them all out and thus to make Britain great again......

Seriously, though, UK is still an EU member so most EU nationals are free to live and work in the UK. Your only complications are likely to involve the journey across the water for interviews etc and their relocation to live in UK, which might be substantial. However the longer term future prospects for EU nationals working in UK are likely to change once Britain formally / legally leaves the EU: those already here are likely to be okay, especially our Irish neighbours, but there is inevitably doubt and speculation as to where and when any future lines will be drawn. This hardly incentivises skilled EU nationals to bring their talents to the UK economy, but there we go - stew in own juice and all that

www.gov.uk/legal-right-work-uk explains the official position just now
  • Hi Claire
Just to be clear for us, can you clarify whhere the person is going to work?
David's reply seems to be for the hypothesis of a person currently in the Republic coming to work in the UK, but I get the impression from your post that they might in fact be expected to work in the Republic of Ireland.
  • In reply to Ray:

Ah yes, on carefully re-reading, I may have mistaken this scenario. If I have, I of course apologise.
If so, it does get potentially somewhat complicated as regards possibly the personal tax regime and / or employment law jurisdiction that might apply to the engineer whilst in Ireland........
  • In reply to Ray:

Hi Ray- you've read it correctly- we are looking for someone to be actually based over n Ireland- we have an increasing amount of work over there and sending an engineer over for each job is becoming untenable. We also know having someone based there would bring in even more work.
To be honest though, I'd not really given much consideration beyond the recruitment issue but have realised that was a little short sighted from reading David's comments below regarding tax/ employment law. Any suggestions where I could go for more info/ support on employing in the Republic of Ireland would be gratefully received!
    Thanks all

    HI Claire
If its Northern Ireland that is part of UK so will be straight forward if it ROI then a bit different as others have said. The CIPD do have a site for ROI. You could also employee someone who works in ROI but lives in NI so that will also have a few issues and vice versa.
I have staff both in NI and ROI and to be honest I have found the only way to get staff is via an agency. People seem to not be bothered to go and look but will leave a cv with an agency. Just my experience here
    Good luck

    Sorry Claire
I meant to post these sites for you to have a look at for more info on employment in ROI

  • Hi Claire
I hope you have made progress with this. A lot of recruitment in Ireland is now done online, on recruitment sites and Linkedin, so they are a good place to start advertising. For an engineering role, you could try Engineers Ireland, the professional association.
Its a tight labour market for engineers at the moment, so don't overlook some advertising in the UK for an Irish-based role.

As mentioned. your contract and working conditions will have to comply with Irish legislation, and you can view our factsheets on cipd.ie.

    Regards
    Mary
